Why, US Gold, why? What have I ever done to you?

That was what I asked after playing Out Run on my friend's A500 back in the
late eighties. Out Run, you see, was always one of my favourite arcade
games, and also my most prized Master System cart next to Space Harrier. So
imagine my disappointment when I was shown THIS monstrosity. Of course,
fifteeen years later, I can look upon the Amiga version a bit more
objectively.

Truth told, Out Run on the Amiga is not that good. It's a marginally
playable game. The controls are a bit stiff for my liking, and the element
of physics isn't really there. (Most cars would NOT spin out if they hit a
potted plant at 220 MPH!)

The graphics aren't abysmal, but they're not all that great either. The
road tends to disappear and reappear at random (in an attempt to simulate
hills and valleys), and curves/turns seem to appear out of nowhere, and
passing vehicles that seem to do the same. If it wasn't for the fact I'd
played the arcade and Master System versions to death, I don't think I
could have gotten as far as I did. One other thing I hate is the almost
ARBITRARY placement of obstacles, such as the potted plants in the middle
of the road. Correct me if I'm wrong, but even Third World countries tend
to keep roadways clear of trees...

The one MAJOR disappointment was in the music department. It SUCKED! I
really enjoyed the soundtrack to the arcade game (so much so that I spent
$50 USD on a Sega Arcade Remix music CD just for "Magical Sound Shower"), so
listening to the Amiga soundtrack is a bit of a letdown. I suppose it would
be alright on its own terms, but compared to the arcade...guess I'm just
spoiled.

Moral of the story: Out Run isn't truly horrible. I have played it more
than a few times over the years, and will probably fire it up now and then
just for fun, but I suspect many would condemn the game as I did initially
in 1988. If you MUST have a racing game, use this as one of your last
resorts...
